Be aware that "Nourishing Destiny" is not any kind of "how-to" manual for the practice of TCM. It is a book about ideas at the foundation of TCM, their origins in chinese mythology and philosophy, and their application in healing practice. This is a book of theory, not a manual.This book doesn't in any way pretend to be a light or escapist read, and that's good, because it's not. It's dense, richly packed with information and analysis you won't find in such a thorough package anywhere else. Or so I've been told by others who've done more reading on the topic of TCM than I have as yet.If you want an entertaining, chatty discussion of TCM, this probably isn't your ticket to that. However, if you want a thorough grounding in this ancient way of seeing the world and Life, or if you're intending to practice any of the healing modalities that are based upon this tradition, then "Nourishing Destiny" is a supremely solid and intelligent approach to it. I'm still working my way through this book, two months after I received it. Not my usual MO, I can tell you! The reason why is that I find myself nodding off every time I sit down to study it's pages. Not because I find it boring; if it were boring, I'd just stop reading it. No, it's so incredibly dense with esoteric, foreign concepts that I have to go into a kind of half-trance to partially comprehend a lot of it. This isn't a bad thing. My whole construct of reality is receiving a refreshing shift and expansion because of this exercise in peering at life through an "alien" worldview. It does tend to send me into Noddyland, though.
If you are study acupuncture or acupressure - this is a MUST READ!!!! Amazing insight into 5-element theory. EASY to read - engaging - not a dry textbook like so many. Also - buying the book led me to the author's website, which is a gold-mine of active study for students and professionals alike. (I am an Energy Medicine Practitioner and Faculty for a International Certification program, have done a LOT of reading about 5-element theory, and I am thrilled to find this resource!)
The book is a good introduction for my study of Stone Medicine.
I am still in the process of reading this book, but the early pages have been really good at explaining the relation between the Dao De Jing and the relation between health and mental/emotional attitudes.
Easy read and very valuable reference work . One of the few accessible book on Chinese Medecin to my opinion.
this book really is incredible. very eye opening and mind blowing thinking about the universe and our world and ourselves in the Taoist way. now I just need to find a book with detailed acupressure therapies. this book really changed my worldview though. I definitely need to read it again.
This is a wonderful book, very lyrical and a lot of knowledge. It can be difficult to get through the way that knowledge is presented if you are used to your every day textbooks. It holds the line between text and verbal tradition.
This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently.
