I got this book for a graduate level soil class. This version of the book is very technical and not an easy read. I've read hundreds of peer reviewed journal articles over my grad degree, but this was a harder read. My teacher gave us pages from the third edition occasionally and I appreciated that version more. So if you can afford the 3rd edition, I recommend that.

I recognize this is the text of choice for many universities, but it is poorly written and either confuses the reader or bores them to death. It is a compilation of research papers that sort of go together, but if you can get the requirements from the lecture, do so and save the huge amount of money this book costs.
