If you are a big fan of the Pern series you will doubtless note several rather large discrepancies in this book: Silvina is described as Fort Hold's headwoman rather than the headwoman for Harper Hall, the Harper Hall and Fort Hold now use the same dining area, Piemer's runner beast (Stupid) now has six legs instead of four, Fort Weyr is now connected by a rather short tunnel to a combined Fort Hold/Harper Hall rather than being a few miles distance and reached via runner beast, the timeline is a bit off, a blue dragon changes to a brown and then back to a blue in one scene, and a bronze and a gold fire lizard are described as two queens in another scene. This was a all bit disappointing to me since I had expected Anne McCaffrey's daughter to be a bit more knowledgeable about the world and history of Pern.Still, Gigi is playing in someone else's sandbox, so I'm willing to allow some leeway here. After all, there are other authors who have made mistakes in the worlds they themselves have created.I did enjoy the book, though I think I might have enjoyed it more if Gigi McCaffrey had picked a different point in the history of Pern to write about, or had focused on other characters in the time period she did choose, because some of what she described for Piemur's actions and feelings didn't fit perfectly with the picture I had formed of him from the other books.Otherwise, the writing and storyline are pretty good. The book held my interest and showed a different side of Piemur and insight into his feelings and growth as a young man as well as giving the reader a better look at things from the exiled "Old Timers" point of view. And there were at least two scenes where the author was able to coax out a few tears, so all in all, I think this book was worth the read.
This story is a sequel to Dragondrums, and continues that story's tone and theme. It is very YA. Devoted fans will undoubtedly appreciate the chance to revisit Pern and some of their favorite characters. But will be disappointed by the lack of plot or conflict. There are also a couple of annoying retcons that will jar you right out of the story. Such as Piemur's runner, Stupid, having six legs. (Which is an affront to anyone who has ever read Moreta). And the fact that Gigi McCaffrey reports N'ton's Lioth as being 37 meters long (i.e.~100ft, larger than a blue whale and larger than Boeiing 747) Apparently, she, or more likely an editor, switched units from feet to meters based on a similar error in the Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern. Similarly an early scene in the book has Piemur contemplating a dragon's telekinetic ability. (Telekinesis was not even a concept in the Pern universe until the AIVAS posited its existence in All the Weyrs of Pern, which is set several Turns after this story. As far as tone and voice, Gigi has done well at capturing her mother's voice and tone as exhibited in the Harper Hall triology.Hopefully, her next foray into the Dragonrider universe will engage meatier substance and supply some plot and action and grow it up a little. Anne never seemed to shy away from adult topics.
I would rate this book 4 1/2 stars. Overall, I loved Gigi McCaffrey's approach to the story and the characters. The 1/2 star deduction is for things that would really only bother a die-hard fan - and only if they care about the little details like I do.Dragon's Code covers key events from The White Dragon (written by the founder of Pern, Anne McCaffrey) from other characters' perspectives, while effectively continuing the story of Piemur, who was the primary focus of the story in Dragondrums (also by Anne McCaffrey). None of that matters if you've never read a Pern novel before - Gigi McCaffrey does a great job of introducing new readers to Pernese society and to the characters from other books.I absolutely loved revisiting some of my favorite characters, notably the harpers Piemur, Sebell, Menolly and Robinton. I felt that Gigi captured their personalities well, which can be hard to do when taking over from another author (even if she is your mom!).As always happens when a lot of books have been written in the same universe, and especially when they were written by more than one author, I found some inconsistencies with the details. For example, indicating that Menolly is an alto instead of a soprano. Making Silvina the Headwomen of Fort Hold instead of the Harper Hall. Generally implying that Fort Hold and the Hall literally share the same common spaces (they're actually separate buildings). Most readers wouldn't notice or care, nor did the inconsistencies have any effect on the plot.I would definitely recommend this book to Pern fans and new readers alike.
I have to admit I was hesitant buying and reading a Pern novel not written by Mrs. Anne, but I am glad I took the chance. In Dragon's Code a new McCaffrey voice takes us into the Pern universe, getting air under the wings of a story which left many people gasping and mumbling unspeakable things when the incident was imprinted into our collective minds the first time. With Dragon's Code we get front row seats to what happened, and how things were set right.I for one welcome Mrs. Gigi McCaffreys voice to my Pern consciousness, and I look forward to many more written words to fill in some of the gaps and take us on new adventures. I am more than ready.
I found myself enjoying this new book in the Pern universe. Much of Anne McCaffrey's voice is present although the complexity of plot and characters were safe and too YA. The author helped the reader feel the context of the character's immediate environment--which was a pleasant enhancement. I do hope this was a literary first "toe in the Pern waters" for Gigi as Pern fans look forward to seeing an original new Pern dragonrider story (or trilogy) in the future--something that steps away from existing Pern characters and tells us what happens after the Lessa/F'lar era? Thanks, Gigi! All the best!
