Good read coming from one of the YouTube greats. Before believing what the mainstream media would say about him, try listening to him or reading his books first hand - you might be surprised.
I'm pretty sure Stefan Molyneux is an atheist yet he doesn't deny the importance of Christian values with regards to western morality. He asserts that the atheist seeks to bring down Christianty without first replacing it with a secular moral code of ethics. While he doesn't make this point clear, I do believe by extension he claims this to be possible. This is where I disagree. There is no suitable replacement for Christian morals in our society. Yet I am not completely certain SM thinks there is either.SM is clearly a truth seeker and never tries to deceive the reader into his point of view. Instead he invites us to think for ourselves.I especially enjoyed the sample arguments at the end.
The goal of this book is to educate the reader regarding the background, knowledge and expertise to understand the value and purpose of philosophy, which is to get you to change your moral habits. The author argues, very convincingly, that everything in philosophy comes down to you changing your moral habits – and changing your moral habits requires a deep understanding of the value of good moral habits, and the disasters of bad moral habits. The purpose of philosophy – the entire substructure and detailed background arguments – is to give you the information and resolution you need to make better moral decisions in the moment. The authors writing style is direct, engaging, and understandable. The book is organized to guide the reader step by step, towards an essential understanding of a very complex subject. I enjoyed this book enormously and wholeheartedly recommend it to readers seeking a better understanding of philosophy.
Loved this book!In it, you will find a complete summary of the free will vs determinism debate and feel the energizing effects of being in control of your own fate. Kick nihilism in the butt and change your outlook on life. You will also find proof of secular ethics, which is a system of morality. In my opinion, through understanding morality, you can increase your emotional self-defense. Emotional self-defense is about feeling certainty about what is right and wrong and not allowing others to manipulate you. Though the author doesn't use this language directly, this book can equip you with these tools for emotional self-defense.The other great feature of this book is that it includes dialogs! In the tradition of philosophers like Socrates, Molyneux takes you through philosophical arguments point by point. I found these dialogs so helpful and entertaining.Overall, this is a concise and fascinating book. A great introduction to Universally Preferable Behavior, or a useful review for those of us who haven't read UPB for a few years. 🙂
No reliance on unexplained fancy words you'd have to look up like epistemology, ontology, metaphysics, etc. Stefan breaks down arguments on the nature of reality and ethics in simple terms everyday people can follow and apply to their own lives. The first part defends free will against determinism. The second focuses on universal preferable behavior (and simplifies his explanation from his prior book on that topic). The third is a socratic dialogue on numerous philosophical questions. He wraps up with a rebuttal to his critics. For those new to philosophy, this book is a great starting point!
This book is a nice distillation of the core tenets of philosophical inquiry. Whether or not you agree with his conclusions, Stefan provides strong arguments for his views. Hes obviously well read in philosophical literature and has spent a good share of time mulling over his ideas. For those just starting down the rabbit hole of philosophy this book serves as a nice starting point, you'll definitely have a lot to think about.I recently finished Stefans 'The Art of The Argument' and must say that I enjoyed Essential Philosophy more. I'd still suggest reading the former, it's a good read, but the latter flowed better, felt more complete. His writing style is definitely improving.I enjoy Stefan and the work he does to spread philosophical insights in an easily digestible manner for many people worldwide, and this work is no exception. Well done.
In this book Stephan Molyneux returns to his more libertarian views from the period before 2016. Though without giving up on more recent insights. As such the book does not offer (much?) news for long time followers, but newcomers may be pleasantly surprised by getting a 'quick start' to Stephans past idea's.I like the book, but don't think it lives up to its title, hence the missing star. The second star went missing because of the huge amount of repetition when he gives examples of how something applies to reality. That may work in a life stream, but in a book I find it obstructs the main line. That said, for this price, you won't regret spending the money!
Stefan is able to tackle some very complex topics but in a way that feels very easy to understand. This is a GREAT READ
