This is a fun engaging book with the material presented in such a way that the reader can use the information to challenge his friends and know he will win the challenge. Each challenge (test of a scientific principle) presented explains the science behind how it works in easy-to-understand language. The author is quite good at making complex explanations, simple. This is a relatively old paperback. The cover is creative and colorful, but the contents are all black and white, so a bit dreary in that respect. The font is extremely small, which means a lot of material (text) on each page, but most of them are broken up black and white sketches, showing what the challenge should look like, (set up, execution) and often is humorous, another inviting aspect to get kids to read the book.
I loved this book when I was younger and now my nieces are loving it too. Fun for kids in 3rd grade and up and a must for any child (or fun-loving adult) who loves science. I will note that some experiments involve flames so adult help is best here if your child is younger side of the age category. I use my old copy as a fun thing for my high school students to participate in and they beg to read the book or "try something from that book" all year long. Everything can pretty much be done with household supplies and nominal set-up time. Also, the book explains WHY you 'can't' do it using science after every event. Perfect for getting kids talking and excited-- and learning-- about science.Last I heard this book is out of print so I had to buy a used copy. However it is well worth the time to hunt it down. Great book!
A favorite childhood book in my home, I had to purchase this for my kids. They love it! I find that I cannot flip through this book without trying some of them, in fact....that is how the book starts "bet you can't get to the end of this book without trying at least one of these challenges."Any and all of these could be great starts to a science project.
Science tricks to do to have fun, for older elementary kids with supervision, but there are some breathtaking science challenges to get kids curious about science.
My kid's had this book when they were growing up and loved it! So, I just bought it for my grandkids, too. My grandson loves it already. My daughter was so excited that I was still able to find this book!
