I was initially excited to see that the production art from ST:ID & ST:B would see release several years after the movies' debuts. The first Kelvin Timeline film's art was well documented in the 2009 art book, Star Trek: The Art of the Film and I was hoping for as much material from the more recent movies. This volume is disappointing as it heavily recycles material from the 2009 art book (about 60% of the material) and devotes very little space to the production art from "Into Darkness" (30% of the material) and only several pages to the art from "Beyond" (about 10% of the material). I feel like this book is a case of too little too late.
This is a weird one. On one hand, if you don't own the 2009 book, it's a well produced artbook of the first reboot, with some artwork from the second and a little bit from the 3rd. On the other hand, this is essentially a budget version of the beautiful 2009 artbook from the first film with criminally little content from into darkness and beyond. In other words, it's a rip of. False advertising I call it. Very disapointing. You bet the book, excited, open it, go through the first section: 'cool, seen ,most of those before, but nice; read the second section: '...okay, some nice artwork, but smaller section then the first, weird...' Then the third section: '...wtf - where is all the art for number three?????' It's like they run out of publishing time or something after starting producing the book - it feels VERY incomplete. I am glad I have this, because there is no other artbooks (outside of the 2009 one) on nu-star trek but it was expensive and it has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Finally the brilliant Kelvin Timeline is getting its just deserves with a good book. I'm a LOOONG TIME fan of the franchise (I grew up watching TOS in the 60's)... love the 3 reboots- great re-imagining of Trek. Nice to follow the train of thought that went along to develop the look/ stories. More please!!
