One could not find a better display of photographs and text, filling page after page of Classic material, detailed here, in possibly the authors' best book (' "THEATRES OF....'') of his series. I spent some time in several of these palaces before their demise in the late 1960's. Amazing for me, is the fact that, at the time, I had no idea that there were SO MANY THEATRES in San Francisco! The grindhouse-3-feature houses were favorites-and at that time they were all over town, and thrilling it was to be able to see a lot of the older films on huge movie screens one last time during this last desperate ride on the crest of that last wave-in-the-set , as they shut down one by one;, and such the praise of those concerned individuals who, with combined efforts , were able to save a few of them; likewise in most cities. Thanks to the author, of course!- and-check out his other 'Theatres of'...series, for more great material found for theatres in other California cities. For old theatre buffs-these books are priceless,; Highly recommended and very reasonably priced!. .
Very Interesting book if you're into movies and movie theatres - particularly theatre architecture. Or if you have spent any time in San Francisco.. Lots of pictures.
I have to say that Mr. Tillmany's book on San Francisco theatres finishes in a dead heat with the one about Oakland's theatres.It was very hard to put down, once I started, so I didn't...put it down, that is. Cover to cover in one night, the same with the Oakland book, I kept thinking, "just one more page, and then I'll turn out the light and go to sleep." I rarely lie to myself like that, but I didn't regret going through the book in one sitting.It's a valuable reference that will find a prominent place in my library and gather a lot less dust than most of my other books.--Preston Allison

Tillmany is the master of theatres. This is thoroughly researched and contains a depth of details. His photo captions are excellent, clearly dated, and with informative remarks about the various people and places also in the scene.
