For many years I have traveled the forest roads of New Mexico with a map book from Shearer Publishing, "The Roads of New Mexico". (At this moment the last year this was published, 1998: 7 Used from $96.83 3 New from $251.50) It has been taped all over and is wearing away. Many roads on it have changed out in the forests. I considered it time to replace it years ago but the book by the same name was then published by Mapsco and it was a decidedly inferior map book. My friends and I all agreed on that. Amazon at this moment has one 1 used for $1,749.04. Definitely not worth it. I decided to purchase this book without the ability to look at it first. I suppose this book is ok for most purposes. It is really disappointing to me. The first thing to strike me is for the size of the state way too few pages are used for the maps. The two books are about the same size; the older slightly larger pages. The older uses 110 pages of maps for the state. This one uses 46 pages. Both use other pages for city areas. Therefore the first thing noticed is everything is very tiny as too much area is on a page. The next thing is this map attempts to combine topographical information with road information and the pages are way too busy. The colors are hard to distinguish area and boundary line differences. The Introduction area of the book has featured attractions of the state and some of them are not in the index so if you want to find them you must refer to other information sources. I have found missing roads, misnamed roads (name extends to private drives not the road), So it trying to do to much it is difficult to use. It is probably fine for a road map if one intends to stay on paved roads and wants general information about the state (camp places and famous places, etc). I would not advise it for anyone off roads and needing accurate topographical maps. This book is intended to be used with other Garmin products: Earthmate gps subscription app for mobile or Earthmate Outdoor subscription app for mobile and a Garmin (or other) GPS system. Then this book can give the big picture and the other products can provide the detailed information. I assume this book and those other products together provide most (maybe all) map information anyone would need.
Very disappointed. We have many gazetteers. The scale on this one or possibly new ones is 1 inch equals 4.7 miles. You might as well buy an atlas because it's too small to see the smaller roads
We have a collection of 7 different Garmin DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer Paper Maps and are very satisfied with all of them. When planning any traveling the first thing we do is order a map for the state. We prefer traveling the back roads of America and these maps show the information we need.
If you just want to follow the roads and don't much care about what to see along the way, probably fine. But then the free mapping application on a smart phone does that. A huge disappointment compared to their Colorado and Utah versions.Same comments apply to the Arizona version of this map book.
Delorme has the best maps. We travel the backcountry in our jeep and rely on them exclusively. GPS is great but will never replace a paper map at our house. We own 15 of them and they are accurate. Would never go into the backcountry without one.
Delorme always makes great map books. This one is no exception. I bought this for an upcoming ski trip and for future trips to the land of enchantment.
Absolutely essential for the "back roads" traveler. GPS is nice when it works. These maps require no batteries or satellite signals.
Love this publishers state by state map books. We own about a dozen of them and they are especially useful when traveling back roads where you need more detail when planning a trip.
