About the Author

Matt Carter, PhD, is currently Assistant Professor of Biology at Williams College. His previous position was as a post-doctoral fellow in Richard Palmiter’s lab at the University of Washington using optogenetic techniques to study neural circuitry. He has authored the first edition of this book (Elsevier, 2009) as well as Designing Science Presentations: A Visual Guide to Figures, Papers, Slides, Posters, and More (Elsevier, 2012). He was the awardee of Stanford University’s Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, and two-time recipient of the Stanford School of Medicine’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He currently teaches courses at Williams in both Topics in Neuroscience as well as Neural Systems and Circuits.Jennifer C. Shieh, PhD, is currently Program Director and SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Coordinator at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the NIH. She co-authored the first edition of this book (Elsevier, 2009), and was awarded the Hans-Lukas Teuber Award for Outstanding Research and Academics in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences Award for Outstanding Scholarship and BCS Contributions.

A useful handbook for common techniques in neuroscience, but sometimes lacks details that would be useful- perhaps one or two example experiments for each technique (and sub-technique) discussed would help make the information more tractable. It is the only text of its kind, though, and for that alone it almost gets five stars- thank goodness someone recognized the need for an all-in-one overview of experimental methods in neuroscience!

Extremely helpful book. It gives a great overview of techniques with enough detail to understand them but not too much that you get overwhelmed. Great for neuroscience graduate students.

I'm a second year PhD student in human toxicology. I don't have a neuroscience background, except for two classes I've taken during my PhD training. My research project focuses on neurotoxicology, so I decided to pick up this book to bridge the gaps in my knowledge that my course work hasn't. I'm really happy with this book, and I use it often. I definitely think anyone new to neuroscience, or just new to a particular technique (such as electrophys, microscopy, behavior), would benefit greatly from this book.

This is hands down the most useful book I've come across as a neuroscience graduate student.
